Project Overview
This project involved the safe removal and replacement of a deteriorating roof on a working farm building at Ellerby Bank Top Farm in North Yorkshire. The existing roof had reached the end of its serviceable life, with delaminating sheets presenting both a safety risk and the potential for further deterioration if left untreated.
As the property is located within the North York Moors National Park, the replacement also needed to respect the character of the surrounding buildings, including a grade-II listed farmhouse, while delivering a durable, long-lasting roofing solution suitable for an agricultural environment.
The Challenge
The existing roof was constructed using ageing fibre cement sheets that had begun to delaminate, creating the potential for material failure and increasing maintenance concerns.
Strict procedures were followed for the handling, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials, with all waste managed in accordance with current environmental legislation.
In addition, because the farm is situated within the North York Moors National Park and features grade-II listed buildings, it was important that the replacement materials remained sympathetic to the appearance of the existing building while providing improved weather protection and longevity.
The Solution
The project began with the safe removal of the existing roofing sheets using controlled working methods designed to minimise risk and prevent contamination. Once the roof had been stripped, the surrounding work area was thoroughly cleaned to ensure it was safe before the new installation commenced.
All hazardous roofing materials were transported and disposed of in full accordance with current regulations, with a hazardous waste consignment note provided to give the customer complete peace of mind and a clear audit trail for the disposal process.
The new roof was completed using high-quality fibre cement roofing sheets, providing a durable, weather-resistant finish well suited to the demands of agricultural buildings. Traditional lead flashings were also installed to create a watertight seal while maintaining a finish appropriate for a property within the North York Moors National Park.
The Results
The completed project has provided the farm with a safe, durable and attractive new roof that will continue to protect the building for many years to come.
By following strict procedures for the removal and disposal of the old roofing materials, the project was completed safely and in full compliance with current environmental regulations.
